Introduction
Welcome to the game!
The Trials of Ashaerya is designed to be an immersive story experience. I want you to feel as if this game is a safe place to suspend your disbelief. I want you to create a person, not just a character. This person should have wants, needs, dreams, fears, family and foes. This person should have motivation behind each action, whether it is a well-thought response or a knee-jerk reaction to a threat. Sometimes one will be better than the other. It will be up to you to decide which is best.
The most important thing to remember about this game is that it is a collaboration. Your Friendly Neighborhood Plot Hammer (otherwise known as "Mitch") does not have to be the alpha and omega when it comes to creative content. Players are more than welcome to ask questions about the world, and then come up with character driven content. While there are some rudimentary rules about Ashaerya that we all must follow, for the most part, let the sky be the limit for your imagination. The Plot Hammer is also not going to pound your head into the ground with rules. If you know the rules for grapple or concealment, and the Plot Hammer doesn't, then speak up! However, if a certain situation has no solid rule and the Plot Hammer has to make something up, please don't moan about it. We're all adults here, and we need to do the best we can to have a good time gaming.
Purpose
The purpose of this forum is to provide a community where gamers can discuss out-of-character issues, and even expand upon the in-game content.
Out-Of-Character (OOC) issues can range from leaving a kind message that you can't make it to the next gaming session, to having a discussion about the political state of Ashaerya. If you have a question about the game where all the players can benefit from the answer, the OOC section will be the place to ask.
In-Character (IC) issues can range from downtime gaming, such as crafting a new item, to having one-on-one sessions where characters can discuss their lives. If the session ends on a cliffhanger, and the characters want to discuss things further, this would be the place to do that. Forum scenes should not be considered an alternative to actual face-to-face roleplaying, however. Limit your forum gaming to scenes that would normally take up too much time and focus from the main sessions.
Please feel free to solo-play your characters on the forum, as well. Solos can range from a story in the character's past, to a journal entry. They can help you get into the mind of the person you're trying to play.
Rules
Golden rules:
1. Have fun!
2. Don't make it hard for other players to have fun.
3. If in doubt, ask a question. Don't assume. Assume = ass-u-me. Got me? Please understand that the answer to your question might be "no," and you will have to deal with that.
4. Have more fun!
5. Don't be afraid to express yourself. If you have a problem, nothing will get solved if you don't say something. Silence breeds resentment. Resentment leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to broken gaming groups. Broken gaming groups means no fun! See rules 1 and 4.
6. Let's be adults and friends, ok? This should not need to be explained.
Character creation rules:
1. 4d6, drop the lowest, get six scores. Don't re-roll 1s. (Example: 6, 5, 4, 1 = 15.)
2. Gold = Starting base for your class.
3. Keep track of your inventory and weight.
4. Maintain spell components for now. If they get too cumbersome, we'll come up with something else.
5. Make a real personality. Write a real history for that personality.
6. The better you justify your character with events, the better your experience will be. If your character is a peasant, you will not have high quality equipment. If he/she grew up around the Elves, you may know Elven, but you may not know how to read/write Elven. consider the little things.
7. Write down your character's alignment, but consider it a guideline rather than a rule.
7. Ask questions. Ask a lot of questions.
8. Make a character you know you will have fun playing! Don't just make a character for the sake of party balance.
9. No Clerics. None. Not a one. Zero. Zip. Nada.
